The General English Course is designed for
students who wish to develop their English
language proficiency for practical, professional
or cultural purposes. The course is offered
at six levels: Beginner, Elementary,
Lower Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper
Intermediate and Advanced.
Students may enter the course at any
level.
Beginner:
This level is designed for students with limited
ability to use English in practical situations
and whose vocabulary and use of syntax are minimal.
Elementary:
This level is designed for students whose proficiency
is developing but who are restricted to communication
within a familiar context.
Lower Intermediate:
Students at this level can express themselves adequately
but limited vocabulary and grammatical errors
may still lead to misunderstanding. The course
introduces students to a wider range of reading
materials.
Intermediate:
Students at this level are increasingly able to use
the English language independently and effectively
in familiar situations. Communication is more
confident and spontaneous but language may still
lack appropriate expression.
Upper Intermediate:
This level is designed to develop and extend the
language skills of students who are able to communicate
and express their needs and feelings. It challenges
them to interpret and analyse material at a more
sophisticated level and reinforces their ability
to use language appropriately in everyway or
specialised language situations.
Advanced:
Students at this level can use language effectively
in a wider and more complex range of situations.
Problems may persist in conveying and comprehending
sophisticated levels of language and reading
and writing in specialised contexts still require
development and extension.
Our General English programmes respond
to the needs of individual students
and are designed to increase students’ confidence
in their ability to communicate in
English. As a starting point, they
cater for students who wish to prepare
for study at secondary school or TAFE
college and are also valuable for those
who wish to improve their English for
social, business, travel or professional
reasons.
Excursions, social and sporting activities
are an important part of the weekly
curriculum and provide valuable opportunities
for English practice outside the classroom.
