Lin Sz-Hua

My name is Sz-Hua and I am from Taiwan.  I am an overseas student who has been learning English at the SA Adelaide Language Centre for 8 months and I am going to stay here in Adelaide for 3 more years.

I came to Australia last August for further study and to improve my English skills.  I have been learning English since I was 12 and I have always been interested in it.  However at home in Taiwan we learned grammar and how to cope with different exams.  I didn’t have many opportunities to use English in my daily life.  That’s why I came here.

As you know, I have been at the Language Centre a long time.  In my opinion, before you do any further study, you really need to study in the Language Centre.  Of course, I have made many diverse international friends here too.  I always speak English with them and, because of them, I have increased my general knowledge and learned many things I didn’t know about before.  I truly enjoy my life as a student in Adelaide.

Gradually my English is getting much better but even now I still can’t communicate with native speakers very fluently.   I still feel tense but I have been trying to make some native friends.   Some of them are really friendly and when they are I feel grateful.  Otherwise I usually watch TV, go to the Cinema and read newspapers or magazines to improve my listening and reading.  I think it is very important to have the same ability in all four areas --- speaking and listening, as well as reading and writing --- and I always try to achieve my aim that my English will become better and better.

In July I am going to start studying at Adelaide TAFE.  The main subject I am interested in is Tourism.  Anyway, I am having a delightful time in Adelaide so far and I hope I will still be as fond of everything here in 3 years’ time as I am now.

I have had a wonderful life in Adelaide as I have been to many interesting places.  I would like to say what I feel about these places.  First of all I will mention the most popular place, which is Rundle Mall.  You won’t feel bored even if you stay there all day long because there are 3 department stores and numbers of boutiques where you can buy everything you want.  Also, because of our excursions, I have had many opportunities to go to some of the most attractive places in the State, for example I have been to the Barossa Valley which is the most famous wine region in Australia, where you can taste all kinds of wine.  I have also been up through the verdant Adelaide Hills to a wildlife park called Warrawong Sanctuary which has lots of unique animals.  Besides these there are still so many beautiful places worth going to.

I like Adelaide very much and if you have the chance to come here I am sure you will like it too.

I have only been in Adelaide for less than two months, but I already feel integrated in the “Australian way of life”.

At St Aloysius’ Adelaide Language Centre all the staff are really friendly and everybody does their best to make students feel good and to make their life easier.  The school provides different course standards so that you can join a class that fits your English level and expectations.

The courses also give you clues to know and understand better the Australian society, which was really important to me as I didn’t want only to learn a language but also to discover a country and its culture.

Moreover, thanks to the international background of the school, I’ve also been able to meet and make friends with students from Japan, Korea, Thailand, etc which is a good experience as well.

Living in Adelaide is very pleasant.  The city is not too big but provides all the facilities and is very peaceful and green with all the parklands around the city.  And all the people I meet are really relaxed and friendly.

In one word, I really enjoy staying in Adelaide and it’s a big thanks to the SA Adelaide Language Centre.
