ADELAIDE is
the nation's
fastest-growing
market for overseas
students seeking
English language
tuition.
If Adelaide City
Council has its way,
those numbers are
going to increase.
Lord Mayor
Michael Harbison and
councillors Bob
Angove, Judith Brine
and Peter Darley
have visited
Adelaide sister city
Christchurch where
they met the
Canterbury
Development
Corporation to hear
about New Zealand's
success in
attracting overseas
students to
undertake English
language courses.
On return, Mr
Harbison said
Adelaide was ready
to follow suit.
"With more
promotion, I am
confident the sector
could expand and
attract new
operators," he said.
Denise von Wald,
chief executive of
Education Adelaide,
the organisation
that promotes
Adelaide to overseas
students, agreed.
The number of
overseas students
coming to Adelaide
to study English has
increased by 20 per
cent in the past 12
months, she said.
SA Adelaide
Language Centre
director of studies
Margaret Dyer can
testify to that
figure.
The centre, which
has 110 students
enrolled compared
with last year's 90,
is outgrowing its
Angas St premises,
she said.
"When we opened
in 1994 we only had
one student and two
teachers," she said.
"But now the
potential to expand
is everywhere."
Ms Dyer said the
majority of the
students at the
centre were from
South-East Asia.
"But we also have
students from South
America and European
countries like
France, Germany,
Italy and Spain and
some from India who
are completing
further study at the
University of
Ballarat's Adelaide
Campus," she said.
